Merle Thorpe Architects

Addition with Pergola

Merle accepted his first residential project in Georgetown in 1989, and in the years since has worked on over 80 residential and commercial Georgetown projects. Projects range in scope from whole-house renovations of historically significant homes, to discrete projects involving all-new additions, interior and exterior renovations, structural repairs and integrated garden hardscape designs. Clients benefit from Merle Thorpe Architects' extensive practical knowledge with the procedures and standards of architectural review in Georgetown. We help clients preserve their home's historic rhythm and fabric, while invigorating traditional forms with appropriate additions and details, and adapting older homes to the needs of modern home life.

Principal Merle Thorpe serves on the Historic Preservation Committee of the Citizens Association of Georgetown and has regularly presented before these local bodies:

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 2E)

The Old Georgetown Board

The U.S.Commission of Fine Arts

District of Columbia's Historic Preservation Review Board

He also works with clients with properties covered by conservation easements such as those held by The Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Georgetown and The L'Enfant Trust.
