Merle Thorpe Architects

When a client called to say another child was on the way, we designed a baby room and bath in the space taken up by the upper story of a cathedral-ceiling library.  We designed the thinnest possible structural floor system to support the new bedroom and bath, while establishing the maximum ceiling height for the library.  Working with interior designer Paul Sherrill of Solis Betancourt, the new library ceiling is composed of salvaged pine boards visually supported by painted wood beams.  The existing stone veneer of the original fireplace remains intact, but is accented by a new mantel made from another salvaged piece of natural-finish timber.
